Your Inner-Critic Is a Whore Part II: Make It Work For You

Please be advised: No hoes or pimps were harmed (or hopefully offended) in the creation of this post.

Whore II

Not to point out the obvious,
but whores hand over any money made
to their pimps;
whores are the indispensable backbone of the prostitution world
yet they don’t run the show.

Stay with me here –
this is not meant to be a tacky analogy,
why should we treat our inner-critic any different?
Ultimately we are in control;
your inner-critic is just one of your little workers.

So how do you make it work for you?
Step One: Acknowledgement

You’ve heard the first step a million times before
because it is the most crucial.
This simple but game-changing, quantum shifting necessity is:
Acknowledge it (him or her whatever personification you assign your inner-critic).
You cannot deal with anything
if you do not know of or acknowledge its existence.**

Step Two: Disarm

Have you ever heard of Emotional Freedom Technique (or EFT)?
It is a counseling technique that teaches you to tap on accupressure points
repeating the core statement
“Even though…dahdahdah happened/exists/whatever…
I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
Woowoo?
Perhaps.
Forget the tapping –
how hard is it sometimes to even say this to yourself?
I feel it too.
You failed,
you were late – you’re always late,
you ate that third (fifth?) donut,
you have all sorts of issues…
that’s fine.
Accept it love the hell out of yourself anyway
and move forward.

Step Three: Listen and Choose

Your Inner-Critic is one tool –
not the whole box!
You can use it to tune into areas you need to work on.
The problem comes in when you
start living in the gloom and doom of the “Sacred Lie”,**
I’m not never gonna be enough.
Let your inner-critic speak up,
but choose to follow its advice sparingly
and let it refine
your prize-winning chili recipe,
your blog posts and poems,
your clay flower pots,
your fantasy football team,
your whatever(!).
When it comes to the inner-critic
it is so easy to forget that we get to choose what to listen to
and leave all the rest.

Step Four: Make Friends or At the Very Least Business Partners

Your inner-critic is NOT your enemy;
you can settle your differences amicably
as long as you maintain that
you are ultimately in control.
You are the pimp and your
inner-critic is your whore.
It is imperative that you keep it in check.
There you have it:
Acknowledge
Disarm
Listen and Choose
Make Friends or At the Very Least Business Partners

XOXO and Let Your Freak Fly High

**These are some of my core beliefs so get ready to continually hear this is you venture on through life and other posts with me.**
